Our History
Southern University Sacramento Chapter Alumni Federation has served as the Northern California voice for alumni for over 50 years. It was founded in 1964 under the vision of Reginald Young, John Anderson, and Dr. Ervin Jackson. Sacramento Chapter‘s mission falls under the umbrella of the National Federation’s mission to support the goals and objectives of the University.
In 1969, the Chapter was revived in the “ole Southern spirit” under the leadership and direction of Joseph Fletcher, John Anderson, Oliver Wilson & Ollie Watson. The Chapter goals are to raise public awareness of Southern University System, to grow our membership base, to assist with development of fundraising opportunities of the Southern University System, and to promote exciting activities and events for our Alumni in the Sacramento area and beyond. These events include: The annual Reggie Young picnic in Land Park, during which Sacramento area students are invited to meet Southern University Alumni and learn more about the University.
The annual Bayou Classic and Homecoming Party to watch the game and socialize while building community between students and Alumni.
We have actively sought out future students by recruiting at College fairs, and high school campuses on career day.
Lastly, we have also held an annual Fundraising luncheon for Founder’s Day, raising funds for our Scholarship program.
Sacramento Alumni Chapter is comprised of over 150 well-known Southern grads who are community leaders, enthusiastic and committed individuals who love Southern University, and are actively engaged throughout the Sacramento Valley and Region.
In 2012, the “Sac-town” Jags brand was created and our chapter has evolved with the times through the utilization of the internet and social media outlets. Led by dedicated and capable leaders, the Sac town Jags strives to keep graduates connected and exposed to opportunities. And above all, continue the fight to preserve the University and its mission by providing scholastic assistance to dozens of area high school students who are looking to “build a future” at our beloved University. Jags forever!!
At this time, we would like to open the floor to anyone who may have anything they would like to add to the Sacramento chapter history.

“Dear Southern”
O Southern, Dear Southern, Thy praises we shall sing,
Until all the heavens and echoes loudly ring.
The winds and the sky as they pass us by
Will Adoration bring.
O Southern, Dear Southern, We owe our all to Thee,
In downfall or vict’ry, We’ll always loyal be.
Thy Sons and Daughters as they work,
Will be inspired by Thee.
O Southern, Dear Southern, Thy name will ever be,
As mighty as the rivers that flow on to the sea,
As pure and true as the Gold and Blue,
That stand out bold for Thee.
